Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was hoping for a move to Real Madrid instead of Arsenal, according to reports.

Arsenal signed Aubameyang on the final day of the January transfer window.

It was a huge signing for the club who managed to attract one of Europe’s best strikers despite not being in the strongest position.

According to France Football (via Sport Witness), the move only happened because Arsenal were his only option.

They wrote a report stating the striker was “dreaming” of a move to Real Madrid, and that Arsenal “frankly weren’t the player’s preferred option”.

This isn’t exactly news to anyone who has followed the 28-year-old, though.

Aubameyang had reportedly promised his grandfather he would one day play for Madrid, according to this report in the Telegraph.

Then, earlier in the season, Goal.com produced a feature about how Aubameyang tried leave Dortmund for Madrid in the summer.

The move didn’t happen, and Aubameyang said that he would move forward.

“I have no dream,” he said.

“I shall no longer speak of Madrid. They don’t want me. This is not a problem. I move forward, I am well in Dortmund. We had an agreement with Borussia that I could leave. It didn’t happen. It is a disappointment. But I’m also happy to stay.”

It’s something worth filing away in case Madrid decide they want Aubameyang after all.

But for now, he’s an Arsenal player and seems happy enough to be here.
