Arsene Wenger considers Mesut Ozil’s contract extension a cheaper option than buying a new playmaker.

Ozil recently signed a new contract that will extend his stay at the club until 2021.

The German once again leads a new era at Arsenal, as he becomes the first player to earn more than £300,000 per week.

Such wages make him one of the best paid players in world football, yet could still work out cheaper than signing a replacement.

That’s what Wenger certainly thinks. Explaining the reasoning behind the deal, he said, as reported by the Telegraph“When you let a player go you have to buy somebody of the same calibre and if you add the wages needed it will be similar.

“On top of that we have to pay a transfer. So overall I think Mesut for us was the cheapest option. On the other side all of our players are well paid. Very well paid. To feel sorry for them – I’m not sure that it’s the most objective assessment.”

When you factor in a transfer for a new player, plus his wages, which would surely be north of £100,000 per week, and the numerous other fees involved a deal, the costs would certainly surpass Ozil’s salary.

His extension also indicates a significant step forward for the club.

Ozil will be under intense scrutiny, and his high wages will no doubt be used against him should he under-perform in any game.

Expectations are higher than ever for him to lead the team and provide decisive moments of quality.

He has the ability to do it, and, all being well, will entertain us all for another three years at least.
