After all the confusion this week over which colour shorts Arsenal will wear in the League Cup final, let’s clear up what happened, and why.

Initially the media reported that Arsenal would wear red shorts in the final.

The EFL confirmed this under “kit colours” on their website.

They listed both the shorts and socks as “red” for the match.

They made the decision to avoid a clash with Manchester City, who also wear white shorts.

Fans might remember that the Premier League made a similar call for Arsenal’s November trip to the Etihad.

That day, the team wore their third kit, despite the two home shirts being completely different colours.

Arsenal also wore red shorts when they played against West Bromwich Albion on New Year’s Eve. Clearly this is something they’re cracking down on in English football.

It’s not actually to help the teams playing the match, but rather to aid the match officials.

If two legs with white shorts and white socks both fly out to contest the same ball, it might be hard to differentiate between them. Although, this shouldn’t really be an issue in this case as City wear blue socks.

After they made their initial decision, the EFL spoke to the clubs involved, and decided to reverse it, making you wonder why they didn’t speak to the teams before making their decision.

Given the magnitude of the cup final, they agreed it was better for teams to play in their usual colours. They also came to the conclusion that the clash wouldn’t have a major impact on the officials.

An EFL spokesperson told the media: “After due consideration, it has been decided that Arsenal and Manchester City will both wear white shorts in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final.

“Arsenal were initially scheduled to wear red shorts, but it is the shared view of the EFL and the Clubs that both teams should be able to wear their recognised first team colours in such an occasion as a major domestic Cup Final so long as it doesn’t cause problems for the match officials.”
