Arsenal continue to scout Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly ahead of a potential move in the summer, according to various reports.

Calciomercato report that Arsenal watched Napoli’s match against RB Leipzig to scout “several players”, but primarily focused on Koulibaly.

They say that the defender “continues to like the English club a lot”.

On the night, Napoli lost 3-1 to Leipzig, but Koulibaly was one of few defensive players who could hold his head high after the performance.

The defender was also one of Serie A club’s best performers as they beat SPAL 1-0 over the weekend. If Arsenal scouts really are following the 26-year-old, and it seems like they are, they’ll like what they’re seeing.

Arsene Wenger’s side have a lot of defensive problems at the moment. The last time they kept a clean sheet in the league was December 16th, now more than two months ago.

That’s only set to get worse as time goes by.

Per Mertesacker will retire in the summer, and take over the Arsenal academy. Laurent Koscielny has an ongoing Achilles problem he’ll probably never overcome.

Excluding the Frenchman, Shkodran Mustafi is the only full-time centre-back at the club over the age of 23.

That would leave Arsenal only a couple of injuries away from a very inexperienced back line next season.

Realistically, they need to sign someone in the next window, and Koulibaly would be a strong option.

They have reportedly been interested in the player since at least last summer when they are believed to have made an enquiry for his services.
