Ian Wright thinks Arsenal showed themselves to be an ‘ordinary’ side last weekend in their defeat against Bournemouth.

Arsene Wenger left Alexis Sanchez at home for the match, and Mesut Özil missed out with a knee injury.

As a result, players like Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck had to pick up the team’s offensive duties. Wright wasn’t impressed with the performance.

“Well I just think Arsenal are in a situation now – especially without players of that calibre – it’s just an ordinary side,” the former Gunner told BBC Radio 5 live (via Daily Star).

“They’re just an ordinary team now. I thought [Alex] Iwobi started the game pretty well, he done really well getting forward.

“Hector done well getting forward, and scored the goal. But in the end they couldn’t finish Bournemouth off. Bournemouth didn’t get themselves in the game, but once they did Arsenal just couldn’t deal with them. Just couldn’t deal with them, because that’s the kind of team they are at the moment.”

Without their star players, the Gunners struggled to create anything substantial.

They had 60% of the possession on the day, but fewer shots (12) than their opponents (13). Plus, a smaller percentage of Arsenal’s shots (25%) were on target compared to Bournemouth’s (38%).

Mesut Özil should be back soon, at least. With any luck he’ll return for today’s game, or the League Cup match against Chelsea. Alexis Sanchez’s situation is much more up in the air and is unlikely to feature due to his impending move to Manchester United.

If he leaves and Arsenal replace well, the team might push past the bounds of ‘ordinary’. If he leaves and the Gunners can’t land their targets, we could be in a for a few long months.

Ian Wright isn’t wrong, the team looked ordinary at last weekend, and they need at least a couple of stars to lift them.
