Former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise is convinced that Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez wouldn’t be interested in signing for Arsenal.

Wise, who played for Chelsea between 1990-2001, reckons that Mahrez would much prefer to go to one of the other clubs linked with signing him. Coincidentally, one of the clubs happens to be Wise’s former outfit.

“I don’t think Mahrez would want to go there,” he said on Sky Sports. “I think there would be other teams that Mahrez would look at and think he’s capable of going into, teams that are in a better position than Arsenal.”

The problem is, Wise suddenly thinks he’s relevant again after being in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here at the end of 2017 and doing the FA Cup draw recently.

Mahrez has also been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, with the 26-year-old reportedly house-hunting in the area after agreeing a four-and-a-half year deal last weekend.

Leicester were even said to have agreed a £49m transfer fee. However, at the last minute, Liverpool ‘sources’ turned round and told the media that the rumours weren’t real.

Arsenal have been linked with the winger since 2016 after the Foxes won the Premier League but he signed a new deal. When we’ve returned for him since, Leicester have demanded too much money.

In the summer, they apparently wanted £50m for the Algeria international, which now seems legit if Liverpool genuinely did agree to pay £49m.

He’s an option if we can’t sign Thomas Lemar in order to replace Alexis Sanchez, but at the moment the Monaco winger seems to be our priority.

Roma also had a go and even reportedly made four bids for Mahrez in the summer. Obviously, they were unsuccessful.

Wise might be right. Mahrez might have the option of going to a ‘better’ club, but at least at Arsenal he’s guaranteed a first-team spot.
