Arsenal have officially waved goodbye to Alexis Sanchez, and Arsene Wenger couldn’t help but have a dig at the 29-year-old’s ‘great contract’ at Manchester United in Tuesday’s presser.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ League Cup semi-final clash against Chelsea, it was only natural that Wenger would get grilled about Alexis leaving for Manchester United.

The 29-year-old’s move up north and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s swap to London finally went through on Monday night.

Wenger admitted that while United is a ‘great club’, the Chilean is moving for a ‘great contract’.

“I think he goes to a great club and has a great contract. You can understand it when a professional player can combine both aspects,” the boss said.

Alexis’ mega-contract at United is no secret and is almost definitely the deciding factor behind his move to the Red side of Manchester.

It seems the forward will be getting up to £500kpw, which will not only make him one of the highest paid players in the Premier League, but also in the world.

Until a couple of weeks ago, the forward was set to join Manchester City instead. Alexis was said to want to reunite with Pep Guardiola.

That all went out the window pretty quickly when United opened their cheque book…

Arsenal could never offer a player that amount. Not just because we aren’t the money-making machine that United are, but it would completely blow our wage structure.

At least it’s not our problem anymore.
