David Seaman believes Arsenal have to offer Wilshere a new contract after his recent form, and feels an England recall is only a matter of time.

Wilshere completed his sixth consecutive Premier League start for Arsenal in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea last Wednesday.

The midfielder has looked good since coming back into the side, but remains out of contract in the summer.

While talks over a new deal are ongoing, David Seaman feels Arsenal would be “silly” not to extend the 26-year-old’s contract.

“Arsenal would be silly not to offer him a new contract,” Seaman told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“I always said, Jack has got some magic, sometimes he reminds me a bit of Paul Gascoigne, he’s got that pass to unlock defences.

“You don’t want to let players of that quality go. They see things other players don’t and Jack is definitely in that league.”

Wilshere is also playing for his England future this season.

He’s made no secret of wanting to play for the Three Lions again, but has to convince Gareth Southgate that he’s fit enough to play.

Seaman believes Wilshere has proven that now, so there should nothing preventing his recall to the squad.

“The way he’s going, I can’t see why not. He’s playing well, he’s fit and he looks a threat,” he said.

“Gareth Southgate said before that he couldn’t pick him if he wasn’t playing, but now he’s playing and he’s producing, so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t get in that squad.”

England’s next match isn’t until March, so there’s still some time to go for Wilshere to prove he is well and truly over his fitness problems.

However, he’s managed to come through the festive period unscathed, and appears as fit as he’s ever been.

If he can keep that up for the rest of the season, he will have truly turned a corner in his career.
