Arsenal want to sign Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins this month, as the Gunners continue their search for an Alexis Sanchez replacement.

With so much talk about Alexis Sanchez and who will replace him, the Daily Star have revealed who Arsenal are really after. Turns out, it’s not Bordeaux’s Malcom or Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Sporting CP’s Gelson Martins.

In another of their famed exclusives, the Daily Star report that Arsenal want the winger, who is valued at £53m by his club, as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez. That £53m figure happens to be what his release clause is, although other reports have suggested it could be even higher than that.

The Star provide no other details about the move and only mention Arsenal’s interest, which is hardly ground-breaking, given there were plenty of links in the summer. If there is genuine interest, it’s been very well-hidden. Their report even acknowledges that Arsenal are looking at Henrikh Mhkitaryan and Aubameyang.

Signing those two would surely leave little room for Martins. If this is real information, then it could end up being an excellent scoop. Otherwise, it just seems like a shot in the dark in the hope they might be on to something nobody else has realised.
