Charlie Nicholas would welcome Arsene Wenger going upstairs after his managerial career, but has questioned who would be picking the new manager.

Arsene Wenger moving into the board room has been a popular idea, and something that Charlie Nicholas would like to see happen.

Post-Wenger life could be rocky, and Nicholas thinks the Frenchman needs to stick around to help the transition.

“I would prefer him to be upstairs, to still have an input into things, because I don’t think he would be too demanding and could help a smooth transition,” he told Sky Sports.

Nicholas went on to question if there was anyone “man enough” on the board to pick Wenger’s successor.

“But who is man enough in the Arsenal board to pick the next Arsenal manager? If he’s going to stay on and pick the manager then that’s fine, but I wouldn’t want him to recommend somebody else and then leave,” he said.

“It worries me that it isn’t clear who the right man to make that decision is and every time Wenger has been asked the question about what he’d do after being Arsenal manager, he’s hinted at moving on – potentially for the France job or to go to PSG.”

Who will end up picking a new manager is something of a mystery.

Wenger picking his own successor has been another popular idea, but you’d imagine Ivan Gazidis and Stan Kroenke will have some say as well.

It’s a question we won’t know the answer to until the manager decides to call time on his career.

Wenger is contracted to the club until 2019, but will have his position reviewed at the end of the season.

His future could come into question if Arsenal fail to return to the Champions League this season.

The team are five points off fourth place with 16 games to play.
