The media continue to link David Luiz with a move to Arsenal, particularly as the Olivier Giroud to Chelsea rumours pick up speed, but do the Gunners really want the defender?

The Daily Star claim Arsenal and Chelsea hope to agree a Giroud-Luiz swap deal before the end of January.

The Brazilian hasn’t been called up for his national side since June 2017 and that looks likely to continue if he stays with the Blues.

An apparent fall-out with Antonio Conte, plus an injury means the 30-year-old has only played four games since October.

It’s clear why Luiz might want to leave Chelsea then, but why would Arsenal want him?

The Gunners are have already brought in a 29-year-old Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and potentially Pierre-Emerick 28-year-old Aubameyang this window. That’s to add to a number of other aging players in the squad already.

Experience is important, but the club aren’t winning the league this year either way. They’ll all be a year older before Arsenal have another chance.

David Luiz also struggles to settle for an extended period of time anywhere he goes. He spent four years at Benfica, then three at Chelsea, then two at PSG, now another one-and-a-half at Chelsea. At that rate, he’ll have joined and left Arsenal by 2019.

For what it’s worth, Luiz is also a decent defender who loves to bomb forward. He could even play in midfield for the Gunners, as he has for the Blues before. I just think Arsenal would be better off looking elsewhere.
