Ricardo La Volpe, former coach of the Costa Rica national team, blames Joel Campbell’s coaches for not getting the best out of him.

Speaking to La Nacion, La Volpe said (via Estadio Deportivo): “He (Campbell) has not exploded yet, he can still give 30% more.

“It’s not that he’s doing anything wrong, because he always believed in himself. He is strong, he has speed, he can dribble.

“There is another one that makes a player shine and that is the coach.”

The 65-year-old said he’d love to sit down with Campbell someday and explain how to get the best out of his qualities.

Right now, the 25-year-old is certainly not at his best, as he’s mostly sitting on the sidelines injured. The winger went on loan to Real Betis over the summer, but he’s only played in four matches (112 minutes).

At first, a knee-operation kept him out, after the Costa Rica international injured himself at the Gold Cup.

He then sprained his ankle with Betis.

At the moment, he still hasn’t recovered sufficiently to get back to playing again.

It’s hard for Arsenal or Betis to do anything with an injured player, though the Gunners haven’t really made much of an effort to integrate Campbell even when he was fit. He’s perpetually out on loan, and this year is his sixth in seven years. Overall the forward has played in 40 matches for Wenger since 2011.

On the other hand, I don’t think he really showed enough to earn a chance in North London anyway.

In those 40 matches, Campbell scored four goals.

Perhaps Wenger and Arsenal haven’t managed him well, but the injuries and the inconsistent form he showed for the Gunners didn’t help either.
