Jose Mourinho has insulted Henrikh Mkhitaryan by insinuating the 28-year-old is worth nothing.

When speaking about Alexis Sanchez’s debut for Manchester United, Mourinho referred to the Chilean as a ‘free transfer’, which suggests that Mkhi, who signed for Arsenal as part of the swap deal, is worth nothing.

“[Alexis] was cheap wasn’t he? A free transfer, that’s good,” said Mourinho.

“For that price it’s fantastic. I think everybody thinks the same in this country. Everybody has to agree he’s a fantastic player and it’s a plus.

“We have a group of attacking players; [Jesse] Lingard, [Romelu] Lukaku on the bench, Zlatan, [Anthony] Martial at home. We have good quality in the group.”

Even though Mkhi only made 26 Premier League starts during his year-and-a-half at United, he cost them £27m back in 2016. I’d hardly call that ‘nothing’ considering he still had until June 2020 on his contract.

The deal has been fantastic for both sides and from Arsenal’s perspective, Mkhi is far from worthless.

Arsene Wenger wanted to sign him from Dortmund before United swept in, so the 29-year-old is hardly a panic-buy.

We’ve also managed to offload a troublesome player, who was disruptive behind the scenes, didn’t want to be at the club and would have left for free in the summer anyway.

In return, we’ve got a player we’ve previously followed, who supported the Gunners when he was younger, will suit Wenger’s style of football and probably wants to prove Mourinho wrong.

Mkhi could make his debut for Arsenal against Swansea on Tuesday.

It’ll be the first time he’s played in the Premier League since United’s 0-0 draw against Southampton on December 30.
