Real Betis could cut Joel Campbell’s loan short this month to make room for a new signing, according to reports.

Campbell joined Betis on loan for the second time in his career during the summer.

A promising ‘homecoming’ has been ruined by injuries and he’s been only been able to play 112 minutes of first team football.

As a result, there is a ‘real possibility’ Betis could send him to back to Arsenal.

That’s according to El Gol Digital (via Futbol Centro America), who report that Betis are keen to free-up a spot in their squad for a player in a ‘better condition’.

The Costa Rican picked up a knee injury during the Gold Cup in the summer and has struggled for full fitness since, even speaking about an injury hell that his manager has admitted has affected him badly.

With Arsenal’s squad so bloated with attackers already and Wenger clearly not rating the forward, Campbell would surely be loaned out or sold during the January window should Betis actually cancel the agreement. Then again, Wenger might claim him to be a Theo Walcott replacement, at least temporarily. Let’s not pretend this is not a possibility.

Campbell spent last season on loan at Sporting Lisbon but despite some promising displays, he couldn’t earn a permanent move during the summer.

Prior to that, he spent two full seasons with Arsenal and made 40 appearances in total.

His contract expires in the summer, so he should be keen to get playing time and put himself in the shop window although he is currently sidelined with a sprained ankle that has kept him out of action since the end of October.

Now 25, Campbell should be entering the best years of his career. As it stands, he has yet to even find a place he can call home.

Signed in 2011, not long after his 19th birthday, Campbell has been sent on six different loan spells. He has scored a total of 26 goals in 201 appearances for all his clubs since becoming an Arsenal player.

His most prolific season saw him score eight Super League goals in 32 games during the 13/14 season he spent with Olympiacos.
