Jack Wilshere could be set for an England recall after manager Gareth Southgate praised his form and fitness.

Wilshere is enjoying a good run in the first-team after recovering from injury earlier in the season. He made his eleventh consecutive start in Wednesday’s game against Chelsea, and completed 90 minutes for the 10th time in that run.

With a new round of international fixtures coming in March, attention will be turning to who will make Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Going by his recent comments, Wilshere could be getting that long overdue recall.

“It’s a real plus to see him playing the way that he is and playing regularly. He’s a player who nobody has ever questioned the quality that he has,” Southgate said, as reported by Goal.com.

“He had a really bad injury that he had to come over at Bournemouth last year it’s no surprise that it took some time. But he looks sharp, he looks fit.

“He’s playing regular midweek games as well. And that’s great because we want our best players to be available and in good form.”

Southgate left Wilshere out of his last squad, citing a lack of meaningful game time in central midfield as the main issue. Since then, the 26-year-old has been a regular in midfield for Arsenal, and has put in some very fine performances along the way.

Given the rather sorry state of England’s midfield, it’d be mad to leave him out again. At this rate, Wilshere should make the World Cup squad, but there’s a lot of the season still to play.

Aaron Ramsey’s return from injury will give him competition in the second half of the campaign. And while he seems as fit as he’s ever been, we unfortunately cannot rule out another injury should he play too much.
