Aaron Ramsey doesn’t seem to be any closer to agreeing a contract extension than he was in the summer, so what’s the delay?
Back in June, the Telegraph claimed Arsenal were opening talks with Ramsey. The Welshman’s deal expires in 2019, and the Gunners didn’t want another Jack Wilshere/Mesut Özil/Alexis Sanchez situation.
Since then, there’s been little progress made. We haven’t heard any public mentions of contract talks like we have with the other three. There hasn’t even been much gossip.
Part of the delay is probably down to yet another injury for the player. Whilst he had a fantastic start to the season, it was cut short by a hamstring problem.
Ramsey has missed approximately 112 games due to fitness issues since joining Arsenal, not including all the games he featured in not 100% as he was on the recovery trail.
Since the start of 2014/15, the 27-year-old has picked up six hamstring injuries alone. That’s not to say the Gunners don’t want to keep him, but it’s worrying.
I think the main issue would be on Ramsey’s end though. He’s always seemed like an ambitious man, and Arsenal’s best players are coming and going around him without the team ever reaching a high level.
There’s only so long you can spend believing this next side is a title-winning one. Hopefully Arsenal can convince him by replacing Alexis with a world class player, and Özil if necessary.
Until then, it’s starting to look like this might become another saga that drags on for another year – the last thing we want.
