Fans are calling for Jack Wilshere to get a place on the plane to Russia for the 2018 World Cup, after the 26-year-old’s club performances in recent weeks.

Wilshere scored the opening goal in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Wednesday night. The goal was another step forward for the midfielder, after his return to the team from injury, and a loan spell away at Bournemouth.

The England international impresses fans more and more with every week. First, it was a landmark just to see him back in the team. Then the Hale End Academy graduate started his first league game of the season in December.

After that, he provided his first league assist against Crystal Palace last week. Now, he has his first league goal. He’s also played 90 minutes in six consecutive league matches. All that should help convince Gareth Southgate to put him in the World Cup squad.

But it’s already convinced supporters, who are asking for a national recall:

It’s not particularly surprising the fans want Wilshere back in the England team. The Three Lions have only scored an average of half-a-goal per game in their last four games. Many people put that down to a lack of creativity in midfield, something Jack can provide.

Let’s just hope Southgate feels the same way.
