Mathieu Debuchy’s move to Saint-Etienne might fall through after the French club prioritised signing Neven Subotic from Borussia Dortmund.

As we reported earlier this week, Saint-Etienne have shown the most interest in signing the right-back. The club are apparently looking to strengthen their defensive options, and considered Debuchy as a possibility.

Now that move looks under threat. Yahoo Sport reporter Manu Lonjon wrote (via tribalfootball.com): “Important thing: It would be Subotic OR Debuchy! Sainté should not do both! The priority would remain Neven Subotic.

“From his answer would depend the Debuchy option. Sainté would like to do both but financially impossible.”

Unfortunately for Debuchy’s chances of a move, Subotic is even more out of favour at his club than the Frenchman. The 29-year-old has five appearances for the season, and no wins in matches he started.

Compared to that, the former Newcastle man is having a great time with the Gunners. He’s played eight games, and helped the team to the knockout rounds of Europa League and the semi-finals of the League Cup. Although he was also in the team that Nottingham Forest knocked out of the FA Cup.

If Saint-Etienne are prioritising Subotic, and the defender is so unwanted at his current club, Debuchy might end up missing out on the transfer.

Arsenal don’t actually have a second-choice right-back, so realistically they’d need to buy if the 32-year-old left. They can’t just let him go for free.

Hopefully Arsenal and the player can reach a resolution before long.
