Sol Campbell says he’d have no hesitation about returning to Arsenal if he gets the opportunity, after the Gunners put in another poor defensive performance.

Campbell was watching on as the team conceded more soft goals last weekend to lose late on. Jim White asked him on talkSPORT whether he’d take a coaching role at the club.

I’d crawl there,” the former centre-back answered. “If that situation happened, I’d be there like a shot. I want to be back in there, I want to be managing and coaching.

“I’m a leader. I was captain early on in my career with Tottenham at the age of 22 and was one of the youngest captains for England. I know how to take the stress on my shoulders and under pressure I know how to win.

“I’ve got so much to offer in all different capacities when it comes to football managing and coaching, because I’m a detail man. That’s how I got to the top and stayed at the top.”

There’s no doubting the 43-year-old’s enthusiasm for the role. Plus, it’d probably get Spurs fans even more worked up to see their former captain back at Arsenal. It’s just up to the Gunners to decide whether he can add something to their current crop of coaches.

Based on his playing experience, you’d have to assume he could. Campbell made 211 appearances for the Gunners, and many more for Spurs. As he mentions, he also captained England from a young age, and played 73 times for them too.

Coaching isn’t all about playing experience though. We’ve seen that a lot over the years. Alan Shearer was one of the country’s greatest Premier League strikers, but he got Newcastle relegated as a manager.

I can’t see the harm in giving Campbell a trial run. If he does well then keep him on, if he doesn’t then it shouldn’t make much difference anyway.
