Bayern Munich have publicly admitted their interest in Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, amid ongoing interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

There has been much speculation about Goretzka’s future after he opted not to extend his contract at Schalke. The 22-year-old will be a free agent in the summer and is reportedly the target for several clubs.

One of those appears to be Bayern Munich. Their sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, confirmed that they had an interest in the midfielder. “Leon Goretzka is a great player, that’s clear,” he said, as reported by the Evening Standard.

“He is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that. But he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him.”

The news will worry the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, who have been frequently linked with Goretzka. Bayern are always keen to sign up the best German talent and have an edge over the competition.

Meanwhile, Arsenal may not even have Champions League football to offer him next season. Goretzka can now negotiate a contract with clubs outside of the Bundesliga, so the Gunners do still have a chance.

He’s made 12 appearances for Schalke in all competitions this season, and has scored four times. His style of play could make him a very useful alternative to Aaron Ramsey, who frequently picks up muscular injuries throughout a season.
