Nacho Monreal and Mesut Özil made it into various teams-of-the-week after their top quality performances for Arsenal in the 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

The Gunners blitzed Palace in the first quarter of the weekend’s match, taking a 4-0 lead. Monreal and Özil were the main reasons why.

The Spanish full-back scored the opening goal, then he assisted the second and the third.

In just 13 minutes, the 31-year-old announced his return from injury by gifting the team a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, he then returned to the injury room on 34 minutes, but hopefully not for long.

All that didn’t go unnoticed. Gazette dello Sport (via sportwitness.co.uk) included Monreal in their European team-of-the-week.

They gave him an 8/10, the joint highest rating on the team. Only Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero joined the Spaniard from the Premier League.

The BBC‘s Garth Crooks also gave the defender a mention. It’s a bit of a running joke that Crooks always includes defenders that score. On this occasion he showed a bit of self-awareness in pointing that fact out, saying:

“Whenever I’ve selected this player, it is usually because he’s scored a goal. However, it would be grossly unfair of me to limit Nacho Monreal’s qualities to his ability to occasionally put the ball in the back of the net.

“The Spaniard has been a pivotal defender for Arsenal for some years now. His all-round game can only be described as infectious.”

Meanwhile Özil was masterful throughout the match, and easily earned a place in Crooks’ team. The pundit gave special mention to the German’s assist:

“The move leading up to the goal was beautiful, matched by the only player on the field with the artistry to take the score to the point of embarrassment for Palace.”

Hopefully we’ll see more of the same on Wednesday, when Arsenal face Chelsea in the League Cup.
