Stephy Mavididi marked his loan move to Charlton with a stylish first professional goal that ended a run of eight games without a win.

Mavididi had spent the first half of the season at Preston but struggled for regular game time in the Championship.

He had that loan cut short, and joined Charlton in League One instead.

The 19-year-old made a big impression against Oldham as he received the ball on the left, beat one defender, cut inside another and then finished at the near post.

The goal proved to be a vital one for Karl Robinson’s side, who had previously gone eight games without a win.

Robinson was full of praise for the young striker and feels he would have more goals had he joined Chalrton in the summer.

“That’s his first professional goal, so what a great moment for the young man,” he said, as reported by South London Press & Mercury.

“Maybe if he’d had come here in the summer he would have six or seven by now. I’m really pleased with him. He works hard. We’ve got to protect him a little but which is why I brought him off on eighty minutes because we know he’s not quite there but I’m really pleased with all the players today.

“(The deal to sign) Stephy was done just before Christmas so that one couldn’t be revoked – we’d agreed with the player so that one was done.”

Mavididi managed 10 appearances for Preston but only played 333 minutes in the Championship.

After a prolific season with the Arsenal u23s, there was hope that he could make an impact while out loan, but Preston clearly didn’t trust him enough to start.

Charlton play at a lower level, but that should give the striker more opportunities to shine. Last season, he almost scored what would have been one of the best solo goals seen in a longtime.

Hopefully, he continues to impress and puts himself in Wenger’s thinking for next season.
