Arsenal have spent the least amount on new signings out of all the big-six sides since January 2016 – even Tottenham have spent more.

Using fee figures from transfermarkt.co.uk, we put together the fees each club have spent on players in the last five windows.

The BBC are reporting Arsenal will pay £1.8m for Konstantinos Mavropanos, so that’s what we included in our total.

Here are the combined amounts for each team:

2Manchester United

£314.5m

3Chelsea

£303.6m

4Liverpool

£229.2m

5Tottenham Hotspur

£159.0m

6Arsenal

£157.1m

You might notice a correlation between the order of teams on that list, and the current order of the table. Funnily enough, it’s exactly the same.

Turns out when you spend more money, your team gets more points.

Who would’ve thought?

Despite the clear connection between spending and success on the pitch, the Gunners have still spent relatively little.

Tottenham are building a new stadium, and they’re still marginally ahead of Arsenal. So that definitely removes the usual stadium repayment excuse.

However, in the club’s defence, these figures only take into account transfer fee.

Wages are another massive part of a team’s spending, and it’s not included here.

For example, Sead Kolasinac joined on a free transfer this summer, but reportedly earns £140,000 a week. That’s £7.28m a year, which is by no means negligible.

Still, I doubt if you included wages as well, the Gunners would get anywhere near Chelsea, let alone City or United.

If Arsenal want to be a team at the top of the Premier League table, they need to start spending like one.

You have to pay to play modern football.
