Arsenal, Inter Milan and Tottenham are monitoring the progress of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jaanik Vestergaard, ahead of a potential summer transfer.

TuttoMercatoWeb write that Inter are considering a loan move with an option to buy, or a straight purchase this summer. However, if they wait until the summer, the Italian outlet claim Arsenal and Spurs will challenge them.

The Gunners will lose Per Mertesacker to retirement at the end of the season, and TMW claim they’re looking for a replacement with similar characteristics. Vestergaard, 25, probably fulfills that criterion.

Like Mertesacker, he’s a bit of a giant, at 6’6″. He also used to play for Werder Bremen. In fact, he’s played in Germany for his entire senior career. Right now, the Dane is a regular for Monchengladbach. The Bunsdesliga club have selected him 19 times this season.

The question is, whether Vestergaard is ready to make the step up to a club like Arsenal. With respect to his former and current employers, none of them provided the same level of competition or pressure.

For example, he still hasn’t played a single European match, Europa League or Champions League. Arsenal are already close to signing 20-year-old Konstantinos Mavropanos, so they need to focus on first-team additions now.

I’m not sure that’s what Vestergaard is.
