Arsenal revealed new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan will wear number seven, following his move from Manchester United. However, he won’t wear it in the Europa League.

On Tuesday afternoon, Arsenal revealed their latest January signing will follows in the footsteps of Alexis Sanchez, Tomas Rosicky and Robert Pires by wearing the no.7 shirt in recent years.

Arsenal fans’ reactions to the news was fairly predictable, considering Monday night’s announcement of Alexis’ departure:

Generally the supporters seemed pretty pleased with the news though:

One fan was hoping to see the new signing wear number 14, but another pointed out Thierry Henry’s former number might be reserved for someone else:

Here’s the full list of Arsenal players who have worn the number over the years:

Liam Brady, John Hollins, Brian Talbot, Alan Sunderland, Paul Davis, Steve Williams, Steward Robson, Perry Groves, David Rocastle, Kevin Campbell, David Platt, Nelson Vivas, Robert Pires, Tomas Rosicky and Alexis Sanchez.

Unfortunately, Mkhitaryan can’t wear the number if he plays in Arsenal’s Europa League knockout tie against Östersund.

UEFA rules only allow one player to wear a number per season. Since Alexis Sanchez played in the Gunners’ opening group game against FC Köln, number seven is now unavailable.

Arsenal say they will confirm Mkhitaryan’s Europa League number soon.
