Arsene Wenger has reflected on his decision to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Anfield, and has hinted he may have made a mistake.

Chamberlain started as a right wing-back in Arsenal’s 4-0 defeat at Anfield in September.

The appearance was just days before Arsenal sold him to Liverpool.

Chamberlain was clearly distracted during the game and not giving his all for the team.

It was just one of several problems Arsenal had that day, and something Arsene Wenger was all too aware of.

“It would be not fair to put the defeat at Liverpool, where the whole team had a bad performance, on one player,” Wenger said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

“After that, on the other side, you analyse ‘did you make mistakes or not?’ You cannot go home and say everything was perfect when you lose like we did.

“I rate Alex highly and he knows that. After that, you want all the players to be respected who have played for us.”

Wenger is correct in saying that the defeat was not the fault of one player.

Chamberlain’s poor performance was just one of many.

However, fans were right to question the decision to play him.

The 24-year-old wasn’t focussed, and Hector Bellerin had to play at left wing-back, where he had a torrid time.

In the end, the club made the right call to sell him.

He could come back to haunt us at the Emirates Stadium, but overall, we haven’t missed him this season.

This time, we’ll hopefully pick our best eleven and a get a good result.

Arsenal haven’t beaten Liverpool since 2015, so now would be a good time to improve that record.
