Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been given minutes in place of Gianluigi Buffon in recent weeks, and his impressive performances will have Arsenal fans questioning his sale.

The 27-year-old, who joined Juve for £11m in the summer, has made eight Serie A appearances this season, keeping five clean sheets.

After spending the majority of the new campaign on the bench, Szczesny has featured in five of Juve’s last seven league outings, keeping clean sheets in each of the last three.

The 32-cap Poland international had been lined up to replace Buffon, and it appears he’s capable of stepping into the Italian’s shoes. Szczesny has conceded only five goals from 10 games in all competitions, while Petr Cech has been leaking goals for fun at Arsenal.

Given how many years the former has on the latter, questions will rightly be asked why the club were so quick to be rid of a talented goalkeeper. Cech’s form has been inconsistent for some time, and his advancing age likely means he’ll leave at the end of his contract in 2019.

David Ospina and Emi Martinez are somewhat knocking at the door, but Arsene Wenger has afforded the former very little playing time this season as a result of his injury problems. Martinez was loaned out to La Liga but has hardly played in 2017/18.

Szczesny was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe after a successful two-year loan at AS Roma, but Arsenal opted to make a fast buck in the summer, rather than making a sensible business decision to utilise him.
