Alan Shearer came under fire from Arsenal fans following his comments on Match of the Day about the Gunners’ poor performance against Manchester United and now he’s hit back.

Shearer and Arsenal legend Ian Wright were both harsh in their criticism of Arsene Wenger’s men following their 3-1 defeat on Saturday and now the ex-Newcastle ace has had his final say on the subject via his Twitter account.

Saturday was undoubtedly a tough day at the office for Arsenal. As Shearer points out, 33 shots, 16 of which were on target, and 75% possession with just one goal to show for it is pretty poor. It speaks volumes that David de Gea – the visitor’s goalkeeper – was their man of the match after making 14 saves.

A team of Arsenal’s quality should be taking their chances during big games.

Although I’m not entirely sure how Shearer expects Gooners to react to him slating their team. Most fans on Twitter seem to agree with the pundit’s criticism regarding their lack of goals but also acknowledge that the performance itself wasn’t actually terrible. It was just a poor result, as most teams experience get during the course of the season.

Then again, Shearer also believes that United could beat City to the title so perhaps we should take what he says with a pinch of salt.
