Arsenal legend, Robert Pires, believes that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez both need stability and, with just six months left on both of their contract’s, they’ve not got it.

Although it’s currently being reported that Ozil could be about to put pen to paper on a new Arsenal deal, Alexis almost definitely isn’t.

This means that at least one of them is uncertain about their future and Pires reckons this instability could be having an impact.

“I think it’s not only very difficult for the club but also for the players,” Pires, who made 189 appearances for the Gunners, explained to Marca.

“When you’re contract is running out, you aren’t comfortable and you need stability.

“I don’t know what will happen in five or six months but I wish that Ozil and Sanchez will extend their contracts.

“I’m not the manager or the owner so I’ll have to wait and see how it goes.”

It makes sense. Alexis has been well below par this season since his move to Manchester City fell through and, if the reports are true regarding Ozil signing a new deal, it would explain why he’s pulled his act together since the North London Derby.

Pires still trains at London Colney alongside the first team pretty regularly, presumably just to stay fit and because he likes the staff. Plus, the Invincible is still close with Arsene Wenger. Therefore, while he may not be privy to any specifics regarding the two stars’ contracts, it’s likely that he’ll at least have felt the atmosphere at the training ground.

If he reckons Ozil and Alexis aren’t feeling stable then they probably aren’t.

In turn, I imagine that insecurity rubs off on the other players.

Hopefully, after this season – or even January – the squad will know where they stand and we can move on, with or without Ozil and Alexis.
