Ian Wright believes Mesut Ozil’s form at Arsenal has peaked due to him playing for a move in January. But it’s also come at the same time talk of a new lucrative contract has emerged.

Ozil has been playing well recently, but his good form coming just days before the January transfer window is too much of a coincidence for some to ignore. Ian Wright certainly feels this way, saying: “The cynics will say he has hit form at the right time for him.

“He’s running down a contract and is linked with other clubs. He’s on a free. It’s very lucrative for him if he can see that out. I think it is more lucrative for him to leave and go somewhere where he thinks he can get Champions League football and might challenge for more trophies.

“It is a cynical view to have but it is very hard to be excited about a player that you need and know there is a good chance that they are going to leave. It is very hard because the kind of form he is showing is what we wanted to see from him and now it is happening we might be losing him. At least he is putting in a shift to help the team win points.

I feel Wrighty is missing another potential reason, that Ozil could be playing for a lucrative deal at Arsenal. In this situation, I feel it’s best to ignore the rumours and enjoy the player.

Ozil has been linked with Manchester United and Barcelona. As a player with a contract that expires in the summer, he has a lot of freedom to choose his next club. If he feels United is a better place for him, then shame on Arsenal for not convincing him otherwise.

However, Ozil doesn’t seem unhappy at the club. While there have been reports about him moving, there have also been reports about him being close to a new deal.

There has been some talk about Arsenal being willing to let him go in January. But such a move would be madness given how important the German is to the team.

The 29-year-old has contributed three goals and five assists in his last nine Premier League appearances. Only Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette have scored or created more goals this season.

Wright’s comments make it seem like this is the first time Ozil has performed well. He has played even better than this in an Arsenal shirt, but a new contract could be behind a clear spike in form.

Reports have suggested he wants a big payrise to stay at the club, so hopefully the two parties can agree terms so we don’t lose a key player next month or next summer.
