PSV technical director Marcel Brands has revealed that Arsenal wanted to sign Maximiliano Romero.

Vélez Sarsfield striker Romero is officially set to join PSV in January for a reported €10m. However, according to PSV director Marcel Brands, Arsenal were also interested in signing the 18-year-old.

Although Google translate claims that Brands says, “He was already very interested in Arsenal, for example.”, from looking at past reports dating back to 2015, it’s pretty clear that it was the Gunners chasing the Argentine. As we all know, Google translate has a mind of its own at the best of times.

PSV announced the signing of the teenager this week in a pretty unique way: Football Manager 2018.

The Eredivisie side shared a video on their official Twitter page of someone playing the popular football game. The video then shows the person playing put in a £2.2m bid on Romero, which is accepted by his former Argentinian side. A deal is finalised and a contract i drawn up until June 2023, which is when his real contract with PSV expires.

This season, Romero has scored four goals in 10 league appearances for Vélez Sarsfield. However, last term he managed just one goal in 18.

Regardless of his stats, Arsene Wenger – or at least Arsenal’s scouts – obviously saw something in the teenager that they like. Good luck to him at PSV.
