Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas, a player Arsenal were previously rumoured to be interested in.

Casillas has six months remaining on his Porto contract and is being linked with a host of English clubs.

According to Jornal de Noticias via Chronicle Live, Casillas is in the plans of Rafa Benitez and Newcastle, but could also be a target for Arsenal, West Ham, Burnley, Liverpool and Brighton.

This is a strange rumour, as you’d think Arsenal would be looking at long-term replacements for Petr Cech, and not an older keeper.

Casillas has been a long way from his Real Madrid best in Portugal, and also commands a huge salary. It seems like Arsenal’s name has been thrown just for the sake of it.

The report links Casillas more with Newcastle than anyone, as manager Rafa Benitez is looking to add more quality to that part of his squad.

Arsenal will need a goalkeeper soon, especially if David Ospina decides to leave and Petr Cech doesn’t rediscover his best form.

As much a legend as Casillas is, though, he’s no longer playing at the level that Arsenal would require from a new arrival.

The veteran shot-stopper joined Porto from Real Madrid in 2015 and has made 73 appearances for the Portuguese club.
