David Moyes is impressed with West Ham’s defensive improvements, after nullifying an Arsenal side containing Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Olivier Giroud.

In 2016/17, Arsenal beat West Ham 5-1, and the scoreline was a completely fair reflection of the way the two teams played on the day, for me. But on Wednesday, the match ended 0-0, and again, it’s hard to say the result wasn’t deserved.

Moyes told BT Sport that his side have exceeded expectations in the last few games, saying: “I saw the fixture when I took the job and I thought, ‘Oh no, here we go’.

“But we’ve tightened up, we’ve not conceded any goals in the last couple of games, and we were a bit unfortunate against Man City.

“I want our football to be better, I want us to create better chances, but it’s one step at a time. Against the better teams we’ve tried to make sure we don’t concede, the other games might give us more chances to be on the front foot.”

Although West Ham weren’t particularly impressive offensively against the Gunners, they still came closer to a goal, having one effort ruled out for offside and another being touched onto the bar by Petr Čech. The closest Arsenal came was hitting the outside of the post in the first-half.

Moyes is giving his defenders the credit for the result, largely because they didn’t allow the Gunners many openings. But Arsenal were just as guilty of failing to create anything of note, and were very wasteful when chances did fall to them.

Jack Wilshere should’ve hit the target from an Olivier Giroud knockdown, and Giroud had plenty of opportunities to get on the end of Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ crosses.

Many other chances were just long-shots with no chance of beating Adrian in goal. The team will need to do better against Newcastle, or it’ll be the same result again.
