Fans of Olivier Giroud will be pleased after Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc revealed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed a ‘secret’ contract extension with the Bundesliga club a while ago.

Giroud was linked with a January move to Dortmund last week. The 31-year-old was rumoured to be replacing Aubameyang, whose contract was thought to be running out in 2020. However, Zorc revealed during a recent interview with Sky Sports in Germany that the 28-year-old signed a year extension a while ago.

Presumably, this means that Dortmund will no longer be after Giroud, who admits that he’ll have to assess his options in January seeing as he’s struggling to get game time at Arsenal.

“In January, I will have to ask myself the question. What the coach advises, it matters,” he said earlier this month.

“A loan can be a solution, but I do not know if Arsenal will let that happen.”

The France international has just 18 months left on his current contract in north London and seeing as he’s only made one Premier League start this season, I highly doubt he’ll want to stay past that or that the club will offer him a new deal.

Giroud’s hugely popular with Arsenal fans and it’ll genuinely be a shame to see him go. However, he took a chance by staying this summer and it hasn’t paid off.

So far, the striker has scored four Premier League goals in 15 appearances this season and three in the Europa League.
