Arsenal could look at picking up Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to reports.

Henderson is currently on loan with League One Shrewsbury, and the 20-year-old has impressed during the Shrews’ promotion charge. In 18 games so far, the keeper has only conceded 12 goals, keeping seven clean sheets.

The goalkeeper told Sunday 17th December’s Football League Paper that Manchester United are “delighted” with how it’s all going, but the paper note that Henderson has a task on his hands to get ahead of Joel Pereira, Sam Johnstone, Sergio Romero and David De Gea, so he could look to move on in the summer.

His current United contract expires at the end of the season, and Arsenal have reportedly been linked with a move on its expiry.

Arsenal would have to pay a compensation fee to United, as the goalkeeper is still under the age of 24. But it would be a fee settled through the Professional Football Compensation Committee, which is preferable to Wenger having to negotiate directly with Mourinho.

The Gunners have a pretty good record of giving opportunities to young goalkeepers recently.

Wojciech Szczesny came through the academy to become the first-team keeper, before leaving for Juventus, and Matt Macey and Emi Martinez have both been handed senior starts in the last couple of seasons.

Perhaps that could be enough to sway Henderson’s decision, but we’ll have to wait and see.
