Some Arsenal fans are confused by the rumours linking the Gunners with Chelsea defender David Luiz, but others are arguing that it makes sense.

Arsenal have been linked with a £30m move for the Brazilian defender in January, after he reportedly fell out with manager Antonio Conte.

Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid are all also following the situation, which has left Chelsea fans a bit confused about why they would want to let go of the centre-back in the first place.

But Arsenal fans don’t seem to be much clearer about why these links have started to appear, with many expressing their bemusement:

Then again, others have argued that the move makes perfect sense, considering the kind of defenders Arsene Wenger has previously brought in:

It’s true that the William Gallas transfer does pave the way for a deal like Luiz. Gallas joined Arsenal from Chelsea and became club captain, though that ended up not being such a great plan and the captaincy was taken away not long after.

Wenger went on to sign Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United a couple of years after, so he clearly hasn’t been put off the concept of bringing in older players from rival clubs – look at the signing of Petr Čech in 2015.

I’m yet to be convinced on the David Luiz rumours, but it’s clearly not impossible.
