Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are all closer to the relegation zone than Premier League leaders Manchester City, after the results in midweek.

Bill Edgar pointed out the stat on Twitter, after the Gunners and Liverpool both dropped points in their midweek fixtures against West Ham and West Bromwich Albion.

In real terms, it would be far less likely for Arsenal to drop down to the bottom three than rise to the top, because of the number of other struggling teams that would need to better their results.

The statistic shows just how far Arsène Wenger’s side are off Manchester City this season.

Although there is still plenty of time to go, a 19-point gap between the two teams means it would have to be the greatest comeback in Premier League history for Arsenal to push Pep Guardiola’s side close.

At this point, a top-four finish has to be the aim, and it’s a much more realistic one. Despite being in seventh-place, Arsenal are just one point away from Tottenham in the Champions League spots, with 21 games still to play.

Here’s hoping they can close the gap at the top of the table and distance themselves from the relegation zone.
