Southampton have been pretty terrible for the last couple of months, but Mario Lemina has played well. So should Wenger reconsider buying the 24-year-old?

Over the summer, Lemina moved from Juventus to Southampton. The Italian club reportedly offered the Gabon international to Arsenal, but Wenger decided against it. The defender midfielder said he was flattered by the Gunners’ interest at the time.

Now he’s at Southampton, but I can’t imagine he’s particularly happy. The Saints have won one game in all competitions since October. Wolverhampton Wanderers knocked them out of the League Cup in August.

That’s a poor record, and the club are floundering in the bottom half of the table as a result, but Lemina has generally played well. He averages a tackle or interception every 16 minutes, which is good from a defensive standpoint. But he also boasts an 89% pass completion rate, as well as 30 successful dribbles – with a 94% success rate.

Arsenal could do with a solid defensive midfielder who can keep possession effectively. Gunners fans have noted how well the player has performed, and asked why Wenger didn’t make a move in the summer. Perhaps the manager could put things right with a bid in January.
