Tony Adams thinks Arsenal won’t win the league under Arsène Wenger, and says it’s “pretty obvious” the current squad aren’t capable of doing so.

Arsenal currently sit in fifth place in the table, 15 points behind Manchester City in first, and the challenge to win the title now seems impossible this season.

It’s only early December, but the prospect of toppling the Sky Blues seems out of the question, and Tony Adams believes Wenger is the one holding Arsenal back.

“He’s (Wenger) contracted for another 18 months, so you’re asking me whether this squad can do it. I don’t think they can, I think that’s pretty obvious,” Adams said to Sky Sports.

“But how long will he go on for now? How old is he, 67? He’s already said retirement is death to him, so you can’t see him retiring and there doesn’t seem to be anything outside of the game for him.

“It wouldn’t be beyond me to see him sign another extension for another couple of years as well.”

Some have suggested that the recent appointments of Sven Mislintat as Head of Recruitment, Raul Sanllehi as Head of Football Relations, and Huss Fahmy as contract negotiator suggest that Arsenal could be preparing for life after Arsène Wenger.

It could just be the club’s tactic to help Arsenal continue to improve under the Frenchman, and I’m sure that would be the official line.

But if you were going to part ways with a manager you’d had for 21 years, you’d want a strong structure already in place for the transition period afterwards, in my opinion.

Regardless of when he leaves, it’s certainly looking difficult for the Gunners to win the league this year. Next year, it’s hard to say, since the squad may or may not look completely different, depending on whether Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere sign new deals.
