Granit Xhaka insists that Arsenal can still catch Manchester City in the title race.

The Switzerland international has made a pretty bold claim following the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Spurs at the weekend.

Xhaka insists that Arsene Wenger’s side could still catch their rivals because ‘anything is possible in football’ despite Pep Guardiola’s team currently being eight points clear at the top of the table, 12 off Arsenal.

“I think in football everything is possible,” Xhaka told Sky Sports.

“Manchester City, at the moment, are on a very good run, they’re doing very well and others have dropped points – which they haven’t done – but it’s conceivable that they could drop points as well.

“They might not continue as they have been.

“But our aim is just to focus on ourselves. We know we need to work and we’re convinced that we can compete at the top.

“Everything’s possible, I’m a person who thinks realistically but has dreams and fantasies as well. In football, everything is always possible.”

At the moment, City are still unbeaten in the Premier League and are looking head and shoulders above the rest of us in terms of quality.

After spending one season bedding in (and almost £140m in transfers) Pep’s team have finally found their stride and are looking unstoppable.

Let’s face it, Xhaka knows it’s a long shot. However, as unrealistic as his prediction is, the 25-year-old has to stay optimistic, or at the very least pretend to. If he doesn’t, what is there to play for? To finish in the top four again?

And how does that look to the fans? If one of our first choice midfielders comes out and says, “Look guys, we ain’t winning the title this year, and probably not next year either, but hang in there, yeah?”, it’s not exactly inspiring is it?

Arsenal are far too media-trained for all that.

Plus, Xhaka’s right, anything IS possible in football…
