Manager Karl Robinson revealed Charlton looked at signing Eddie Nketiah in the summer, while admitting they’re in the market for a goalscorer in January.

There are probably a number of clubs interested in loaning Nketiah at the moment, after the 18-year-old scored two goals on his senior debut at the Emirates. He’s also put away five goals in three games for the England u19s over the international break.

Karl Robinson says the Addicks were interested even before that, telling the Charlton Athletic Supporters’ Trust: “We looked at Eddie Nketiah between the windows this year. Then he scored those two goals against Norwich.

“The board have told me I need two strikers (in January). I’d like one little and one large.  Most strikers will be holding on for a move to the Championship so transfers in might be late in the window.”

As mentioned, Charlton are only in League One at the moment, so if the teenager does go out on loan, he might be better off trying to join a Championship club.

However, there’s clearly some interest there from Robinson, so it might be one worth considering to get regular game time.

Stephy Mavididi joined Charlton on loan last January, and by all accounts things were going very well for both the club and the player until a bad hamstring injury ended the striker’s season.

Robinson said at the time: “He has been in tears which is sickening because he’s been tremendous for us and we wish him all the best. He has been a credit to his family and to Arsenal FC and we’d love to have him back next year.”

Mavididi ended up joining Championship club Preston North End instead, but clearly his loan helped build a good relationship between Arsenal and Charlton.

We’ll see if that develops into anything further in January, but for now Eddie has a couple of Europa League and League Cup games with the Gunners to try and get involved in.
