Robert Pires believes that Arsene Wenger is still the right man to lead Arsenal.

Arsenal have lost four out of 11 Premier League games this season, and are far behind leaders Manchester City in the table. Despite this, former winger Robert Pires still thinks Arsene Wenger is the man to take Arsenal forward.

The Frenchman thinks the team has played well since the start of the season but could do with a bit more spirit. “For me, he’s still the man,” Pires told ESPN. “He has done well for a long, long time.

“Sometimes it’s difficult with a lot of pressure from the fans and media, but he’s always very relaxed and confident. He always believes in the players, and that’s a positive.

“We lost the last game against Man City, but City have played really very well since the beginning of the season.

“I feel that there is still good quality in this Arsenal team — maybe we just need more spirit and commitment.”

Unfortunately, if spirit and commitment was all it took to win games, Arsenal wouldn’t be where they are currently. Many would also disagree the Gunners have played well since the start of the season, given that they were well beaten by Liverpool and Manchester City, and have lost to Stoke and Watford.

Not every defeat and poor performance is Wenger’s fault, but when it happens on multiple occasions, questions are going to be asked. The long-serving manager signed a new contract in the summer that will extend his tenure at the club until 2019.

Knowing how Wenger likes to work, he will want to see out those two years and do his best to get Arsenal challenging for the Premier League again. He faces a big match against Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.
