Emi Martinez has played just once for Getafe this season, having joined the La Liga side on loan in the summer. Things haven’t gone to plan.

Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation is far from healthy at the moment. With Petr Cech’s form declining, David Ospina lacking the quality to replace him and Emi Martinez in no-man’s land in Spain, the solution is far from obvious.

Martinez’s case is especially concerning. The 25-year-old has been at Arsenal for seven years now, serving mostly as a third-choice in case one of the two first-team keepers pick up an injury of suspension.

In that time, he’s hardly developed into anything approaching first-team quality. 30 appearances on loan at Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday was encouraging, and a loan to to Getafe in La Liga looked ideal.

It was meant to be his chance to get consistent, top flight action against quality teams. However, three months into the season and Martinez has featured just once in the Copa del Rey. He’s been on the bench in every La Liga game behind first-choice keeper Vicente Guaita.

Arsenal should know all about Guaita, given they were linked with him numerous times in the past. The Spaniard has played over 100 games for Valencia and 90 games for Getafe, and was always going to be stiff competition for any new keeper coming in.

You have to question why the club thought Getafe would be a good club for Martinez to be at. It really reflects poorly on the state of goalkeepers at the club, that only one is first-team quality, while all the rest either have no experience or, in Martinez’s case, not up to this level of football.
