Former referee Dermot Gallagher says Arsenal were correctly awarded a penalty against Burnley on Sunday.

Aaron Ramsey was fouled by James Tarkowski in injury time to give the Gunners a penalty, which Alexis Sanchez converted.

Arsène Wenger and various pundits agree that it was a fair decision, but Burnley supporters were less keen to accept the call, especially after the last couple of matches between the two teams.

Dermot Gallagher was asked about the decision on Sky Sports after the game. He doesn’t believe the Burnley supporters were right to feel aggrieved, however.

Gallagher backed Lee Mason’s decision. He said: “I think the key thing here is that once you put two hands on someone’s back and push, it’s not like a body contact,” reports Sportsmole.

“You see challenges in the box where bodies come together. Here, he has put his hands into his back and pushed. In that case, the referee is duty bound to give a penalty.”

If Burnley fans were being honest with themselves, they would probably feel more annoyed at Tarkowski than Mason or Ramsey.

The Arsenal midfielder probably wasn’t even going to reach the ball. In the box you shouldn’t be taking those risks, especially with the scores level and only seconds of the match remaining.

The push was definitely sufficient for Ramsey to go down. But even if it hadn’t been, why make such an obvious move with the referee close by?

Unfortunately for Tarkowski, Mason spotted the infringement and awarded the penalty, and Burnley will have to start all over again in midweek.
