Arsenal head scout Steve Rowley will leave the club as he’s fed up of being blamed for failed transfers, according to reports, but what transfers, and were they really his fault?

Rowley has been Arsenal’s chief scout since 1996 and has discovered many high quality players for Arsene Wenger.

However, recent signings haven’t been as good. It’s difficult to pinpoint whose fault this is, but it seems some of the blame has gone Rowley’s way and he’s not best pleased.

According to the Daily Mail, Rowley feels he’s been made a scapegoat for Arsenal’s poor signings and has apparently told colleagues he’s had enough.

The story is complicated by Arsenal’s use of analytics company StatDNA to sign certain players.

Some of Arsenal’s more recent acquisitions, such as Lucas Perez, Gabriel and Granit Xhaka, were brought using the data the company provided.

It so happens that two of them didn’t work out at Arsenal, while Xhaka is currently struggling.

Mohamed Elneny and Shkodran Mustafi have also struggled to settle into the Arsenal first team.

Elneny is far from first choice in midfield, while Mustafi could have been sold during last summer’s transfer window.

Going back a bit further, there’s the likes of David Ospina and Calum Chambers, who have struggled to become first team regulars.

It’s unknown how many of those players were Arsenal’s main targets, or just back-up targets that were signed after failing to secure their preferred options.

Rowley’s pending departure could be a part of a ongoing shake up in the club’s transfer department.

Dick Law, the club’s negotiator for several years, recently left the club and there are ongoing reports of a Director of Football coming in during the summer.

Perhaps Ivan’s catalyst just needed a bit longer to get going….
