Arsenal and Manchester City are both interested in 20-year-old Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to reports.

The central midfielder is contracted to the Dutch club until 2019, and has started to find his way into the first team this season, despite his age. He’s made 10 first team appearances already, and as a result has caught the eyes of Arsène Wenger and Pep Guardiola, claim The S*n.

Both managers are apparently interested in a January deal for the player who appeared late on in last year’s Europa League final against Manchester United.

For most of last season, de Jong played in the u21 teams for Ajax, and performed very well, even scoring six goals and providing eight assists despite his deep midfield position. Those performances saw him win the Dutch second division’s Talent of the Season award.

As a result, towards the end of the season Frenkie started to get first-team chances, and those have continued to come in the current campaign. In his last start de Jong scored and assisted, and he’s certainly not doing his credentials any harm.

However, we’ll have to wait and see whether Arsenal really are interested.

The Gunners already have a couple of central midfielders coming through the youth academy, and The S*n isn’t exactly the most reliable source of transfer news.
