During Cesc Fabregas’ spell at Arsenal, there was one particularly feisty confrontation between the Gunners and Manchester United in 2004 – called the Battle of the Buffet.

Arsenal had been looking to make it 50 league games in a row unbeaten, but a Wayne Rooney dive and a nightmare refereeing performance from Mike Riley put an end to those dreams. The Gunners were furious and there was a fight in the tunnel after the game.

Whilst the fight was going on, someone threw a slice of pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson, which hit him in the face, and on TV show ‘A League Of Their Own’ the Spaniard finally confirmed it was him.

After admitting to throwing the pizza, Fabregas then clarified a few details: “Keown is a liar because I saw him in front of me just, like, punching people so he didn’t see anything. All of a sudden, I heard noises and I thought what’s happening?” reports the Metro.

“So I go out with my slice of pizza and I saw Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Martin Keown… everyone pushing each other. I was like I want to get in but I don’t know how to and I threw… peeew… just threw it. Once I saw it was hitting, like, who it was hitting, which I didn’t mean. I apologise Sir Alex, really didn’t mean to do that”

So, finally we have some closure on what really happened that day, and honestly I’m surprised to learn it’s all true. I thought it was one of those footballing myths we’d never have confirmed.

Knowing how worked up professional footballers can get on and off the pitch, and with the longest unbeaten league run in English history coming to an end, maybe we all should have expected something so bizarre to take place.

Clearly they weren’t thinking straight, but I have to give some praise to the former Gunner for owning up to the iconic tunnel clash. I wonder if we’ll get a response from Sir Alex anytime soon.
