Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil could be considering his future with the club over a bizarre row with Jack Wilshere over his number 10 shirt.

The Mirror‘s John Cross reported that Özil had been going around telling the other Arsenal players that his move to United was a done deal, but the Manchester Evening News deny this is the case.

They write that United haven’t made a move for the German, and the rumours of Özil’s assertions that he’ll be joining United are false.

However, they also note that the shirt number issue between Jack Wilshere and the German midfielder is continuing to be a problem in contract discussions.

For those who don’t know, Özil is keen on the number 10 shirt, as he considers it part of his brand. He even worked the number into his Twitter handle “@MesutOzil1088”, with the ’88’ at the end being a reference to the year of his birth.

Wilshere hasn’t been keen to give the number up, even when he went out on loan to Bournemouth for a season, and MEN write that this is a sticking point in negotiations.

Özil only has a year left on his contract, so if the player and the club don’t come to some form of resolution soon, the 29-year-old will be able to start negotiating a move elsewhere without needing the Gunners’ permission to do so.

Considering the German’s man-of-the-match performance at the weekend, and the way Arsenal played with him in the team, losing him now doesn’t seem like a good idea.
