Reiss Nelson admits he’s just happy to be getting a ‘sniff’ of first team football at Arsenal this term.

Nelson has now made four first team appearances for Arsenal – not including the Community Shield in which he featured for 33 minutes – and the 17-year-old admits he’s just happy to be getting near the senior squad.

“I’m delighted (with my progress),” he told Goal. “I wouldn’t say I’ve broken into the team but I am getting a sniff of first team football. I’m happy with that. If I continue to do well and the gaffer puts his trust in me, I can break into the first team soon.”

Nelson is an exciting player to watch and Arsene Wenger obviously thinks so too as the wide-man-come-wing-back is now starring more and more alongside senior squad members.

The England u19 international played a full 90 minutes against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday evening. He completed 88% of his passes, as well as six dribbles.

It’s also likely that he’ll feature in the Gunners’ League Cup clash against Norwich City at the Emirates on Tuesday night as he played for 84 minutes against Doncaster Rovers in the previous round.

If Nelson continues to put in strong performances both at home and away, as he has done, then it only makes sense that the boss will continue to give him the nod.

By the end of the season, who knows? Perhaps he will have already made his Premier League debut, just as his teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles did against Newcastle when he was the same age in December 2014.
