Nacho Monreal has made it into WhoScored’s Europea team of the month, based solely on the statistics they gather.

Whilst most team of the week/month0style articles are based solely on the opinion of the author, perhaps with a few stats thrown in to back it up, WhoScored come up with a team based on the figures alone.

The Daily Star report that this month, Monreal has been selected for their team, as seen below:

The team is the best possible starting XI from Europe’s top five leagues: The Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga. So, for Nacho to make it in is an impressive achievement, especially given he’s played so many minutes, yet managed to stay consistent throughout.

Overall, Monreal got a rating of 8.2 out of 10, which even made him the highest rated defender in the team.

Nacho has been very solid recently as the Gunners managed to go without conceding a goal for the whole of September. His goal-line clearance against West Brom and numerous recoveries against Chelsea were my highlights.

It’s also a slap in the face of everyone who spent August telling anyone who would listen that the Spaniard isn’t a centre-back and should stick to playing wing-back.

He’s more than stepped up to the task and in Koscielny’s absence actually looks to me like the Gunners’ best defender.

Long may it continue.
